Role playing (more commonly referred to as RPing) is a form of playing/writing. It's a fun thing to do, especially if you like reading and writing stories. It's pretty basic to learn, and in time you will become much better.
With each post you make, just pretend you are writing a really short story or essay about what is going on from your characters point of view.
Talking
Your character can't just be silent! So don't be afraid to say anything your character wants to say! Remember that anything your person says, YOU aren't saying, so if you call someone a idiot, we all know that it's just for the game. To make your character "talk", just write what you want him/her to say and make sure to put quotation marks around whatever they say.
----------
Example: "That's not a problem, I'm fine with practicing on my own."
Action
Your character can't just be all bark and no bite, though. He/she's gotta do things, go places, and there's nobody I know who stands still and just talks about everything. To make your character do anything, just type it.
----------
Example: Joel panted as he ran through the hallways, hoping to make it to class on time.
Out of Character (OOC)
Anything you say in the boards (besides the general boards and other OOC boards and private massages [PM's]) is what your character is doing. Anything you say in quotation marks is what your character is saying. So you want to say something in the RPing boards that you're actually saying? You, as in NOT your character. Then say it in parenthesizes or brackets.
----------
Example: (This has nothing to do with the roleplaying I just did! )
So that's pretty simple, right? Those are all of the three components of basic RPing. Put it all together, and a single post could look a little something like this...
----------
Example: Joel sat at his desk, thankful that he had managed to get to his class before it started. Actually, the teacher had yet to run into class as usual, and so Joel was granted a few more moments to catch his breath. He smiled at the person sitting at the desk to the right, holding out his hand and hoping for him/her to shake it.
"Uh, hi," he said. "I'm Joel."
(Joel needs friends. xD)
Not all posts have to have all three components; some posts may only have one thing! (Meaning, one post might just have action-no talking or OOC talking.) Feel free to get creative with your style of RPing, and have fun with it!
Other phrases and rules of roleplaying:
1. No powerplaying. Powerplaying is when you control what another person's character does in any way. For example, even typing something like, "My character punched your character in the face" is powerplaying because you are attacking them without giving their character a chance to respond or block the attack.
2. Be realistic. Your character ISN'T perfect, in battle or otherwise. If your character is engaged in a fight with another character, your character will get hit. It is unrealistic for anyone to be able to dodge all the attacks without a problem (excepting certain teachers as they have been training for years).
3. No godmodding. Godmodding is when you use OOC (out of character) knowledge and act as though your character knows it as well, when truthfully they do not. Examples are if you know that say, Cody West is the brother of Alec West, and you pretend that your character has this knowledge when they haven't met either.
4. Try to have good grammar. This includes punctuation, capitalization, and not having sentence fragments. This is more of a general guideline for the sake of your own fun. I know for a fact that people are less willing to roleplay with somebody who does not write well. It allows people to have more fun roleplaying with you, and makes the site all around better.
Thank you.
